Choosing a home design is one of the first items to address when building a Country Log Cabin. Certainly it is the most exciting. A perfect floor plan will not only fit the needs and budget of the family, but also the building site. Lay-out and personal taste choices follow, such as what style of home (contemporary, rustic, etc.), how many floors (single or multi-story), traffic patterns and use items such as a guest entry, secondary entry, placement of kitchen, bedrooms, etc. Think toward the future, but if the budget won't fit for the future, plan a home that can be modified as the family's needs change, i.e. new addition to the family, in-home office, retirement, etc. Basic items to consider are: number of occupants, bedrooms and bathrooms; foundation type; roofing options; number and types of windows and doors; waste system; potable water source; heating options; ventilation and/or air conditioning; and outbuildings, such as garage, workshop, etc. General lifestyle questions are critical when planning the interior/exterior space and traffic patterns. Consider what type of space works best—open or cozy nooks; what about entertaining; special needs (wheelchair access, eldercare options, etc.); pets—dedicated rooms, doggy doors, enclosed outside spaces; hobbies; guest accommodations; inside to outside transitional space; clean-up rooms—mudrooms, covered entrances; laundry close to kitchen or garage, ground floor or basement; porches/decks—wraparound, front, back, open or closed; fitness, library or office space/room; and plenty of clothes and coat closets. Country Log Cabin customers can custom design their own home from top to bottom, or use one of CLC's exclusive Destinations Designs. Either way, Country Log Cabins can create any design and modifications are as easy as one, two, three...
How much can you afford... Price per square foot is a common way to evaluate affordability prior to choosing a log home package, but this is a relative term dependent upon personal preferences. Country Log Cabins has developed a guideline to help determine project cost. Simply choose a design and finish preference, and then enter square footage in order to calculate approximate cost. Conservative Home Design A conservative home design primarily considers effectiveness and functionality. The design is streamlined to make the best use of materials and space, allowing the customer to appreciate the most home for their financial investment. This type of design will not include expensive aesthetic applications that are not structurally required, such as decorative beams, heavy timber stairs, round beams or complex roof styles. These are only a few examples of strictly aesthetic applications; consult with your CLC sales representative to determine if elements included in your design are structurally required. Finish Preferences Conservative finish preferences follow the same guideline as the conservative design. Flooring, cabinetry, lighting fixtures, plumbing accessories, etc. are chosen by means of a cost effective approach. A conservative price per square foot would be estimated at $100 Please note: Construction costs can vary considerably in locations that demand a higher than average labor rate. If uncertain whether your building location falls into this category please contact your area sales representative or the Country Log Cabins corporate office for personal assistance in estimating costs. Moderate Home Design A moderate approach to design carefully balances aesthetics and effectiveness, emphasizing creative design elements without exorbitant costs. Limitations are set with the value of aesthetics examined relative to the cost associated with incorporating each element into the design. Finish Preferences Moderate finish preferences include the strategic placement of costly accompaniments. For example, a gourmet chef may feel that kitchen design and layout is important enough to budget for a more elaborate kitchen. Flooring and masonry work are other common areas where buyers may opt to increase their allowances for finish work. A conservative price per square foot would be estimated at $125 Please note: Construction costs can vary considerably in locations that demand a higher than average labor rate. If uncertain whether your building location falls into this category please contact your area sales representative or the Country Log Cabins corporate office for personal assistance in estimating costs. Elaborate Home Design An elaborate design considers aesthetics and personal preferences above all else. In some cases the aesthetics are determined first and functionality creatively engineered after the fact. Extremely wide open spans, complex roof systems utilizing handcrafted heavy timbers, hand pealed posts and railings, and multi dimensional roof systems are just a few examples of elaborate design preferences. Finish Preferences Aesthetics and personal choice drive finish preferences where the sky is the limit when it comes to choosing the finishing touches of the log home. A conservative price per square foot would be estimated at $175 Please note: Construction costs can vary considerably in locations that demand a higher than average labor rate.
